When decay in a tooth is caught early it can usually be treated with a filling. When you come to your dental cleanings on a regular basis, we are able to look for decay when it is in it’s early stages. At that time the dentist will evaluate how many surfaces of the tooth is involved and then recommend a filling if appropriate.
At the filling appointment, the tooth being filled will be numbed with local anesthetic or Novocaine so that the dentist can remove the decay without discomfort to you. As soon as all of the decay is removed, the dentist fills the tooth with a tooth colored filling material.
Tooth colored fillings are beneficial because the material is physically bonded to the tooth which creates a very tight seal around the edges of the filling. They are also cosmetically appealing since the color of the filling can be matched to your natural tooth color.
